Hello Andreas,

Your account is currently being moved to a new cluster. Unfortunately your account may be offline for up to 24 hours as the DNS need to propagate throughout the Internet.

We will automatically make the required DNS changes on our name servers. Should you for some reason not use our DNS or use static paths in your scripts these are the new settings:

IP: 77......
Homedir: /home84a/sub002/.....

I hope this resolved your problems.

Hi
Ruby on Rails Applications start very very sssllllooowww and sometimes the simply give Application error, or Internal Error 500. We have nothing changed on our Application, so it is an issue somewhere else as it was working perfectly before.

Other Applications like TYPO3, Lifetype start faster but also much slower than before.

gem list
/usr/bin/gem:9:in `require': no such file to load -- rubygems (LoadError) from /usr/bin/gem:9

It seems like you don't have ruby gems loaded and therfor also fcgi won't work

Jan 03 - 12:52 GMT
Customer

I JUST asked some PROFIS in the Rubyforge Forum and here their answer:

Stunned.

Now I am wondering why Redmine (and any rails app) works there even by cgi.

I think that this you need to solve via support. Ask them about gem list and whether rails app will work via fcgi at all...
--------------------------
My Reply:
--------------------------
That's what I have just done. It seems that No GEMS at all are available. But why is cgi working? - Perhaps a hidden GEM ;-) alibi GEM (like we provide Ruby on Rails Hosting at Servage :-)
--------------------------
Check it our here:
http://rubyforge.org/forum/forum.php?thread_id=20474&forum_id=7505
--------------------------
You better solve this Problem as fast as possible and Install or Reinstall all GEMS

Thanks

You are advertising a working RUBY on RAILS Surrounding and it seems that it isn't at all working in fcgi Mode. But Thru your FAQ you make People believe you have fcgi working with RoR. I would call this NOT GOOD and I am pretty sure that German Judges would think the same way!!! Because of this we already lost 3 WEEKS!!!
So Hurry up and install a PROPER RoR Surrounding TODAY - IMMEDIATELY and think about how you can get this "ERROR" for us also solved in a KULANZ (ask Steffan your sysadmin he knows what I mean) way. Time is Money and we lost 3 WEEKS TIME!

SENDING EMAIL FROM RUBY APPLICATION ON SERVAGE HOSTING

We are receiving this error while sending email notifications from redmine (or any other ruby application)
------------
An error occurred while sending mail (Connection refused - connect(2))
------------
this meesage differs from application to application of course but is caused by the same error.

we have created an Email Address in your control panel for those notification mails.
----------------
YOU FAQ SAYS:
----------------
Error 'Sender address rejected: Access denied'

When using our SMTP server this error indicates that the address you use as sender address is not registered on your Servage account. E.g. when using sending mail from user@example.com it is important that the sender address user@example.com is an account on our servers.
----------------
As we have created noreply-red(at)t3log.info and it is existing on your account it should work ;-)

================
How to create a new e-mail account?

Here is a guide how to create a new e-mail account:

Please click on the "E-mail Accounts" tab in the left menu in the control panel. Please select the domain name you would like to create an e-mail account for and click on the "Create New Mail Account" tab in the left menu. Please fill out the form and click on the "create account" button.

Now all your login details will appear. You are able to access this site with the account details at any time via the control panel ("E-mail Accounts" please click on the "Existing E-Mail Accounts" tab).

REDMINE - Mysql::Error in AccountController#register

#28000Access denied for user 'redminedevelopdb'@'10.6.46.2'
(using password: YES)

SOLUTION:

=========
Check your Database Entries in database.yml -
usually the mentioned database has got the wrong password
Change it to the right one :-)

REDMINE - Errno::ENOENT in WelcomeController#index

No such file or directory - /tmp/mysql.sock
TRIAL 1
=======
In database.yml you delete all database entries beside your production site:
RESULT:
The page will be blank!

TRIAL 2
=======
Adding "socket: /tmp/mysql.sock" to database.yml (production)
RESULT:
No change

Trial 1 + Trial 2
=============
RESULT:

Application error

Rails application failed to start properly
Putting back all other database entries into database.yml (Redo TRIAL 1)
RESULT:
Same Error as at the beginning shows up

>> It seems to do something with the database entries

TRIAL 3
=======
Putting Password in database.yml in "password" with " "
RESULT:
No changes at all

TRIAL 4
======
Entering Data for dev database in database.yml
RESULT:
The complete REDMINE site shows up perfectly

TRIAL5
======
Deleting "socket: /tmp/mysql.sock" to database.yml (production)
RESULT:
The Pages still show up perfectly

------------------------------------------
FINAL RESULT
------------------------------------------
It seems like REDMINE needs at least 2 databases assigned.
The passwords and connection entries in each database are completly different
- different connection settings "mysql_***" as on servage you are using no localhost
- different databases
- same or different passwords (both working)

REDMINE Owner/Permissions on Servage Hosting

Permission denied ...
this error message appears often on Servage Hosting Spaces. You can solve the problem in setting the right owner/permission. Try to avoid 777 - instead you should use "webserver" as owner.

The following folders need to be set to "webserver"
  1. files (otherwise you can't upload files)
  2. log
  3. tmp
If you receive this:
  1. Errno::EACCES in ProjectsController#add_document
    then your files folder is not set to "webserver"

Hi Servage.
Meanwhile since a day we are waiting for a clear solution ho you will get your fcgi up and running. It is still not working. WE would like to change from cgi to fcgi as sid in you wiki, but we can't as you still haven't solved the fcgi problem since this morning.

i.e. http://www.t3log.info is running in cgi as fcgi will simply output textfiles instead of processing them You better check this.

I have already written 2 times the link but after submitting we didn't got any answers back for days!!!.
Check your FAQ as it is written down there!
I guess you should know where your fcgi is placed and actually it should be enabled on ALL clusters you are offering as you advertise full fcgi support not only for several clusters.

It seems like your support again has no idea about what they are doing. That is so sad for Servage to have such a poor support.

Simply go to t3log.info

then you see that the domain points to 1_redmine
now check this folder 1_redmine
here you will find the rakefile like in all ruby installations and lots of subfolders like in all ruby installations. Here you ALWAYS need to check the PUBLIC folder (it is again the same in all ruby installations) and inside this public folder you will find the .htaccess and the dispatch.cgi and dispatch.fcgi and dispatch.rb files.

Usually you don't need to change these files and they are also the same in all ruby installations.

the code is like this (simply compare it with your FAQ):
===================================
.htaccess
-----------------------------------
# General Apache options
AddHandler fastcgi-script .fcgi
AddHandler cgi-script .cgi
Options +FollowSymLinks +ExecCGI

# If you don't want Rails to look in certain directories,
# use the following rewrite rules so that Apache won't rewrite certain requests
#
# Example:
# RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/notrails.*
# RewriteRule .* - [L]

# Redirect all requests not available on the filesystem to Rails
# By default the cgi dispatcher is used which is very slow
#
# For better performance replace the dispatcher with the fastcgi one
#
# Example:
# RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.fcgi [QSA,L]
RewriteEngine On

# If your Rails application is accessed via an Alias directive,
# then you MUST also set the RewriteBase in this htaccess file.
#
# Example:
# Alias /myrailsapp /path/to/myrailsapp/public
# RewriteBase /myrailsapp

RewriteRule ^$ index.html [QSA]
RewriteRule ^([^.]+)$ $1.html [QSA]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.cgi [QSA,L]
#RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.fcgi [QSA,L]

# In case Rails experiences terminal errors
# Instead of displaying this message you can supply a file here which will be rendered instead
#
# Example:
# ErrorDocument 500 /500.html

ErrorDocument 500 "

Application error

Rails application failed to start properly"
=====================================
As you can see we had to DISABLE fcgi to get redmine working
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.cgi [QSA,L]
#RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.fcgi [QSA,L]

if you change the # to the cgi rewrite the dispatch.fcgi won't get parsed at all and it will appear as textfile in your browser!
#RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.cgi [QSA,L]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.fcgi [QSA,L]

perhaps your fcgi isn't installed perfectly.

=====================================
dispatch.cgi
-------------------------------------
#!/usr/bin/ruby

require File.dirname(__FILE__) + "/../config/environment" unless defined?(RAILS_ROOT)

# If you're using RubyGems and mod_ruby, this require should be changed to an absolute path one, like:
# "/usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/rails-0.8.0/lib/dispatcher" -- otherwise performance is severely impaired
require "dispatcher"

ADDITIONAL_LOAD_PATHS.reverse.each { |dir| $:.unshift(dir) if File.directory?(dir) } if defined?(Apache::RubyRun)
Dispatcher.dispatch
==================================

==================================
dispatch.fcgi
----------------------------------
#!/usr/bin/ruby

#
# You may specify the path to the FastCGI crash log (a log of unhandled
# exceptions which forced the FastCGI instance to exit, great for debugging)
# and the number of requests to process before running garbage collection.
#
# By default, the FastCGI crash log is RAILS_ROOT/log/fastcgi.crash.log
# and the GC period is nil (turned off). A reasonable number of requests
# could range from 10-100 depending on the memory footprint of your app.
#
# Example:
# # Default log path, normal GC behavior.
# RailsFCGIHandler.process!
#
# # Default log path, 50 requests between GC.
# RailsFCGIHandler.process! nil, 50
#
# # Custom log path, normal GC behavior.
# RailsFCGIHandler.process! '/var/log/redmine_fcgi_crash.log'
#
require File.dirname(__FILE__) + "/../config/environment"
require 'fcgi_handler'

RailsFCGIHandler.process!
===================================

All those files have been posted already quite often ;-)

I hope to get a resonse very soon, as we need this trouble ticket solved before we can open another one. Thanks Andi!

biblio.t3pack.info - also a basic RoR Application for testing isn't working with fcgi either. It also works at the moment only with cgi:
Here its files

.htaccess
-------------------------------------

RewriteRule ^([^.]+)$ $1.html [QSA]

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.fcgi [QSA,L]

ErrorDocument 500 "

Rails application failed to start properly"
======================================
It is actually the same like on t3log.info ;-) but here I enabled fcgi instead of cgi so you can see what happens if you enable fcgi. OUR t3log.info site is in PRODUCTION so I can't demonstrate it here!!!

======================================
dispatch.fcgi
--------------------------------------
#!/usr/bin/ruby

# RailsFCGIHandler.process!
#
# # Default log path, 50 requests between GC.
# RailsFCGIHandler.process! nil, 50

# # Custom log path, normal GC behavior.
# RailsFCGIHandler.process! '/var/log/myapp_fcgi_crash.log'
#
require File.dirname(__FILE__) + "/../config/environment"
require 'fcgi_handler'

RailsFCGIHandler.process!
-------------------------------------

You can also check: biblio.t3pack.info to read the fcgi as it gets displayed on the screen instead getting parsed ;-)

Ruby on Rails fcgi - fastcgi NOT WORKING AT SERVAGE HOSTING

Jan 01 - 17:58 GMT

Hi it seems like your fcgi or fastcgi isn't working properly:

Try here: http://biblio.t3pack.org

It shows you a working Ruby on Rails Application.
Switching to fcgi/fastcgi will cause that the dispatch.fcgi won't get parsed. It will show up as text!!!

You can test tis when you change in www/biblio/.htaccess
RewriteRule ^$ index.html [QSA]
RewriteRule ^([^.]+)$ $1.html [QSA]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.cgi [QSA,L]
#RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.fcgi [QSA,L]

to

RewriteRule ^$ index.html [QSA]
RewriteRule ^([^.]+)$ $1.html [QSA]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.fcgi [QSA,L]

Line 32/33 .htaccess
--------------------
RewriteRule ^$ index.html [QSA]
RewriteRule ^([^.]+)$ $1.html [QSA]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
#RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.cgi [QSA,L]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.fcgi [QSA,L]

will display the ruby and rails application "biblio" and you can edit save ... with no problem

RewriteRule ^$ index.html [QSA]
RewriteRule ^([^.]+)$ $1.html [QSA]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.cgi [QSA,L]

Hi Servage
YIPPI It is working but only with CGI!!

So please check fcgi - somethings seems to be wrong here in your server configuration:

I got Redmine Working using cgi instead of fcgi.
I copied the settings from our biblio example to redmine
.htaccess
dispatch.cgi
dispatch.fcgi

Then it was working

In other words something seems to be wrong with your fcgi and this was holding us up now since over 2 weeks!!! and delayed our progress a lot!

I hope you can fix the fcgi problem in the next 8 hours (our night here - but your day!) We will check tomorrow as like you write in your faq fcgi is 10times faster then cgi

ANY NEWS on the FCGI Front as ruby on rails is still not working with fcgi on SERVAGE HOSTING and therefore pretty slow

HOW TO MAKE SERVAGE HOSTING PERFECT?

Difficult Question as the first thing which needs realy to be changes is the SUPPORT at all. Fire all of them and try to work together with a professional SUPPORT CENTER > OUTSOURCE these activities to profis if you don't have own ones available. The one SERVAGE HOSTING has at the moment is not at all acceptable!
--------------------------------
But this will be another Thread:
We will list here some small things which would make life at SERVAGE HOSTING much easier:
--------------------------------
THE FILEMANAGER
  1. Insert a reload bottom into your filemanager
  2. Add a ZIP/TarGZ Functionality to the filemanager to pack folders and files (i.e. for backup)
  3. Add a COPY and PASTE functionality to the filemanager
THE WEB SERVERS
  1. The Virtual Hosts of xyz are not sorted which makes managing very difficult if you have a TEST website i.e. with 100 of sub domains. They should be sorted 0-9-A-Z
  2. Creating a subdomain is fast but it won't be active for hours / perhaps even days!!! this is incredible for any production, test or development site
MYSQL DATABASES
  1. All Databases should be sorted in a list 0-9-a-z in all views!
  2. The standard collation should be set to utf-8-unicode-ci instead the now existing latin-swedish-ci
    Until now you always need to switch to phpmyadmin before inserting any data into your databases to switch them to utf-8 otherweise they are latin1
    Actually it would be OK to have this process:
    1. Create a new database
    2. Add a field which asks for the collation utf8-unicode-ci
    3. execute the sql querie to achieve the utf-8 settings
    Then no additional accessing of phpmyadmin would be necessary
AUTOINSTALLER
  1. Drupal is running only on MYSQL 4 Mode
  2. Joomla is running only on MYSQL 4 Mode

This post will be continued and updated - so stay tuned!

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR TRAINING SERVAGE HOSTING STAFF IN RUBY ON RAILS

Jan 01 - 15:58 GMT
Customer

Hi Servage Support. As your support wasn't able to name me at least one ruby on rails website on their server which is running I created one myself. So now you get one ;-). It is a very simple one - only a small library program called biblio.

You can link to the article about it and how to get it running on Servage Hosting as it is pretty difficult as Servage won't provide SSH, which means you will need to build actually a local system and transfering it then to SERVAGE HOSTING step by step. I wrote the article like you HAVE ssh on Servage and only made a remark that there isn't ssh and you need to use another computer for this ssh part.

If you have any suggestions how this "ssh" Part could be created on Servage Hosting I really would appreciate it.

It became now very clear that the main problem creating Applications on Servage Hosting seems to be the routing and the population of the database via ruby.

Try to build "biblio" by yourselv on a SERVAGE ACCOUNT without ssh and you will see that it is IMPOSSIBLE without ssh. You should really reconsider making ssh available yes or no. :-) as it would improve Servage a Lot.

Hello Andreas,

We do not allow Telnet/SSH access to our systems for security reasons. However our techs will be more than happy execute commands for you on request.

Have a nice day and Happy New Year!

Hi SAM

Unfortunately your Techs have written in the last 2 weeks just the opposite as you can read in our blog. Would they have executed the commands like I wrote them in my firstpost over 2 weeks ago we would never had lost so much time and even the blog you can read now about Servage Hosting Support would never been existing I guess. Please scroll down all posts in the blog about Servage Hostin and Ruby on Rails and how often I asked your techs to execute the mising commands as I could not do it lacking ssh access. And they even wrote the ADMIN will do it and get back to me, but even he did never get back to here and the commands have until now never been executed. It is IMPOSSIBLE torun RoR Application with this support you are giving on Servage Hosting. You really need to have a SECOND Installation at another hoster to build up your applicatation and test everything out and the you can transfer everything to SERVAGE - A real STUPID process or???

It would be much more help to have ssh access, and SECURITY reasons are the WRONG argument by the way as a GOOD HOSTER who thinks about quality provides ssh in a secured surrounding! ;-)

However our techs will be more than happy execute commands for you on request.

Why do you think ssh access would cause security problems for SERVAGE HOSTING why? Name me and we will see how you can secure each single argument ;-) quite easily.

It is now the 6th time we are getting to you with exactly the same error. Everytime we create a Subdomain (in future this will happen about 10 times a day as we are testing lots of stuff) the subdomain won't get called and instead the MAIN DOMAIN Page shows up!!!

PLEASE SOLVE THIS NOW AND FOREVER - IT IS TOTALLY FRUSTRATING ALWAYS TO GET BACK TO YOU WITH EXACTLY THE SAME ERRORS - DON'T YOU HAVE QUALIFIED STAFF???

HOW LONG HOE MANY HOURS AS THIS IS REALLY BLOCKING PRODUCTION!!!

Which means SERVAGE HOSTING would not be a good site for a development or a production setup! Really Bad!

On other hosters this works within seconds, why not at SERVAGE HOSTING? Is there any other chance (workaround) you can suggest?

One workaround could be to create by default hundreds or even thousands of subdomains for your accounts and existing domains at one time and then lateron choose from them. Would this be possible and will the subdomains connect then immediately to the right folder if you change them in

CONTROL PANEL,
WEB SERVER,
LIST VIRTUAL HOSTS,
GO TO THE DOMAINS via VIEW ZONES,
CHANGE SETTINGS
Enter a new LINK TO PATH: /....

will this path the connect immediately or do we need another day to get this working?

We are trying to find the error with your gigantic RUBY ON RAILS Problems on YOUR SERVAGE SERVERS and therfore we need to run several test applications to compare settings.

i.e. we started with
Hostname: bibliothek.t3pack.info
Document Root: /www/bibliothek

and need now as the above showed errors. to confirm them we wanna run another test here

Hostname: biblio.t3pack.info
Document Root: /www/biblio
> shows www.t3pack.info instead

We also just tried to set another document root but it shows only errors:
Hostname: bibliothek.t3pack.info
Document Root: /www/biblio
>shows Page not found Error 404

Servage - Nick

Hello Andreas,

Due to our clustered architecture your website/domain/subdomains are served by many servers and for dns update through all the servers it needs the time mentioned earlier, there is no other way around in our system to make it fast.
Thanks for your understanding.

Biblio Another Ruby on Rails Example for SERVAGE HOSTING Testing

First of all we will need databases:
We will use "development" and "test" in our example here
In your SERVAGE CONTROL PANEL go to MySQL Databases
  1. Create new Database
  2. Name one Database biblioTest and another one biblioDev
  3. don't forget to type in a password
  4. Note all Database Connection Informations as we will need them later
In CONTROL PANEL open up Online - Filemanager
...
now go to www
(as Servage does not offer ssh you need to do the following steps externally and copy the result "biblio"-folder to the www folder and the databases contents to the databases via import-sql)

TYPE
>rails biblio
this command will create a folder named "biblio" and inside of it the following:
create
create app/controllers
create app/helpers
create app/models
create app/views/layouts
create config/environments
create components
create db
create doc
create lib
create lib/tasks
create log
create public/images
create public/javascripts
create public/stylesheets
create script/performance
create script/process
GO TO
$ cd biblio
TYPE
>./script/generate scaffold_resource Book title:string isbn:string created_at:datetime updated_at:datetime
This will create the following:
exists app/models/
exists app/controllers/
exists app/helpers/
create app/views/books
exists app/views/layouts/
exists test/functional/
exists test/unit/
create app/views/books/index.rhtml
create app/views/books/show.rhtml
create app/views/books/new.rhtml
create app/views/books/edit.rhtml
create app/views/layouts/books.rhtml
create public/stylesheets/scaffold.css
create app/models/book.rb
create app/controllers/books_controller.rb
create test/functional/books_controller_test.rb
create app/helpers/books_helper.rb
create test/unit/book_test.rb
create test/fixtures/books.yml
create db/migrate create db/migrate/001_create_books.rb
route map.resources :books
TYPE
$ rake db:migrate
If you type it here then you will receive the following error:
rake aborted!
No such file or directory - /tmp/mysql.sock
A well known error caused as until now your "biblio" don't know where to find the right database. Therefore we need to enter some database information.

GO TO
Control Panel
Online File Manager
/www/biblio/config
EDIT
database.yml
Into this YAML(TM) Template you enter all database Values so that it looks like this:

# MySQL (default setup). Versions 4.1 and 5.0 are recommended.
#
# Install the MySQL driver:
# gem install mysql
# On MacOS X:
# gem install mysql -- --include=/usr/local/lib
# On Windows:
# gem install mysql
# Choose the win32 build.
# Install MySQL and put its /bin directory on your path.
#
# And be sure to use new-style password hashing:
# http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/old-client.html
development:
adapter: mysql
database: rorbiblioDBdev
username: rorbiblioUSdev
password: DBpassword
host: mysqlxxx.servage.net

# Warning: The database defined as 'test' will be erased and
# re-generated from your development database when you run 'rake'.
# Do not set this db to the same as development or production.
test:
adapter: mysql
database: rorbiblioDBtest
username: rorbiblioUStst
password: DBpassword
host: mysqlxxx.servage.net

production:
adapter: mysql
database: bibliothek_production
username: root
password:
host: localhost
Save and Close and try again:

TYPE
$ rake db:migrate
Now the tables will get created as you can see in the output:

(in /mounted-storage/homeservage/subservage/scservage-id/www/biblio)
== CreateBooks: migrating=====================
-- create_table(:books)
-> 0.1884s
== CreateBooks: migrated (0.1885s) ==============
GO TO
Control Panel
Online Filemanager
/www/biblio/app/views/books/new.rhtml
EDIT

New book

<%= error_messages_for :book %>

<% form_for(:book, :url => books_path) do |f| %>

Title

<%= f.text_field :title %>

Isbn

<%= f.text_field :isbn %>

Created at

<%= f.datetime_select :created_at %>

Updated at

<%= f.datetime_select :updated_at %>

<%= submit_tag "Create" %>

<% end %>

<%= link_to 'Back', books_path %>
DELETE the bold Part
CHANGE "
Isbn" to "ISBN" as it will look much nicer :-)
GO TO
www/biblio/app/models/book.rb
EDIT so that it looks like this:
class Book < ActiveRecord::Base
validates_presence_of:title,:isbn
end
GO TO
www/biblio/app/controlers/book_controller.rb
EDIT and CHANGE line 5 to:
@books = Book.find(:all,:order=>'created_at DESC')
Now our book entries will get sorted. Before saving check that there is only ONE Bracket at the End of this line ;-)

GO TO
www/biblio/config/routes.rb
CHANGE line 16 to
14 # You can have the root of your site routed by hooking up ''
15 # -- just remember to delete public/index.html.
16 map.connect '', :controller => "books"
Don't forget to remove the # at line 16!!! to enable this line

GO TO
www/biblio/public/index.html
RENAME or DELETE it

GO TO
Control Panel
Web Server
View (your Host where you want to add the subdomain "biblio")
Let's fill some data in:
$ruby script/console
Now we are in the Surrounding to insert Ruby and Rails Code
>book=Book.new(:title=>'Ruby and Rails at Servage Hosting',:isbn=>'12345678')
This creates a new book
>book.save
Saves
the Entry

Go to your site and ENJOY.

This post will be continued with some more testing later - happy new year

He seems to be very happy about Servage but actually hasn't posted any RoR Application he is running on Servage. Only the same pamflet is available like the one in the FAQ what isn't working.
